FRBM: Montek plays down differences with FM

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Aug 30

The Planning Commission Deputy Chairman, Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, today played down differences with the Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, on the issue of fiscal prudence and said that the Plan panel and the Finance Ministry were still in initial stages of consensus building on the issue.

"We have never been against the idea of fiscal prudence. Our main concern has been on getting substantial resources for the Plan programmes.

"If we are reassured that we can achieve growth momentum within FRBM (Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management) Act targets then we will have no concern," Mr Ahluwalia told newspersons.

On reports that he had differences with the Finance Minister on the issue of relaxing FRBM targets to fund planned programmes, Mr Ahluwalia said: "This (differences) is nothing unusual. The job of the Planning Commission is to raise issues for debate."

He added: "Our main concern is to reach an agreement with the Finance Ministry.

"Incidentally, I have spoken to the Finance Minister on the issue. Our discussions are still in the preliminary stage and we are hopeful of a satisfactory agreement on the issue."
