`Power over Ethernet' tech catching up.

Quick work

PoE technology enables transmission of both data and power across the network through one cable.

Coimbatore , Sept. 1

Israel-based PowerDsine, a pioneer in Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, is planning to roll out a series of products.

Speaking to Business Line, Mr Vikas Pinjarkar, Country Manager (India), PowerDsine, said the 3000-series would comprise `entry-level products' while the `sought after products' would be categorised in the `6000-series'.

"The AD 6548/SE/M would be a compact product, not taking much space but at the same time connecting 48 terminals," he said.PoE technology enables transmission of both data and power across the network through one cable.

Concept catching on

According to Mr Pinjarkar, 95 per cent of the Indian market is still in non-PoE switches, but the concept is catching on as it allows greater flexibility in locating access points and network devices, notwithstanding the reduction in installation costs.

"The PoE standards got rectified in 2003. Until then all vendors followed their own standard. We have patented a number of products and have been a key contributor to the standards set by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)," he said.

Also termed as "Active Ethernet" or "Power over LAN", PoE extends the ultra-broad functionality of Ethernet by supplying DC power over the same Category 5/5e (Cat 5/5e) twisted-pair cable that currently carries Ethernet data.

Modelled after the technology used by the telecommunications industry to supply power to telephones, PoE enables quality power for IP telephones (VoIP) and other low-power Ethernet network devices such as the wireless access points (WAP) and security cameras, explained Mr Pinjarkar.

The company has shipped over 20 million PoE ports worldwide and is upbeat about the market in India, Korea, Japan, the US and Europe.

It has joined hands with the Ethernet Alliance. "This is unlike past alliances that support single IEEE 802 Ethernet projects, by speeding acceptance and time-to-market for new Ethernet market technologies, developing new ones, and educating Ethernet users on their choice and implementation of various applications."
