Telecommunications States - Andhra Pradesh BSNL plans expansion in AP Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Sept.1 Telecom major Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has charted out major expansion plan in Andhra Pradesh across its line of offerings fixed land line, mobile telephony, wireless in local loop (WLL) and broadband services. The Chief General Manager, BSNL, AP Telecom Circle, Mr R.K. Arnold, said that the corporation plans to add about five lakh mobile phones in the next six months to take the number to about 1.8 million and add about two lakh new fixed lines during the current year. "As a part of expansion and consolidation of the corporation's nationwide network, we see a huge growth cutting across offerings be it land lines or mobile phones. To increase the coverage in the State, it is planned to set up about 1,400 additional towers, that will ensure a more robust network," he said. Speaking after the launch of a telephone directory brought in league with Indiacom Ltd, Mr Arnold said BSNL now has about 30 lakh land lines in the State and 13 lakh mobile phones. Given the features and cost advantage BSNL offers to customers, more customers are seeking services from BSNL. As the network is being strengthened, both the reach and coverage is set to get better.
BSNL's performance
Referring to BSNL performance, he said that the corporation earned Rs 40,000 crore in revenues and the circle accounted for about Rs 3,000 crore with profit of Rs 600 crore. With additional infrastructure, BSNL would be able to expand its cellular service during this year and the next year wherein it is proposed to add another 15 lakh mobile phones. The Managing Director of Indiacom Ltd, Mr Ashok Mandore, said that the company continues its long-term association with BSNL in bringing out this directory, both in the printed form and through a CD. This is the 10th edition of the directory brought out by Indiacom for BSNL. Referring to Indiacom, Mr Mandore said they currently offer these services across 32 cities and plan to reach out to 100 cities by 2007. Alongside, it is now proposed to provide all of this information on the Web, where one can access numbers through a combination search be it either through name, address or numbers. In addition to this service, Indiacom in league with BSNL plans a single number access wherein operators would provide the information to a caller. They can reach the operator through 1255722.
