Mulls options to float joint venture

Hyderabad , Sept. 2

The Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA) of Malaysia is keen on associating with the Hyderabad-based Nandan Biomatrix Ltd, focussed on natural products and medicinal plantation, to promote herbal industry in Malaysia on a large scale.

FELDA, which is into helping the Malaysian Government carry out rural land development schemes to uplift the economic status and living standings of rural community, has successfully developed close to one million acres of mostly forestland into oil palm and rubber plantations, the Authority's Chairman, Mr Tan Sri Dr. Mohd. Yusof Noor, said.

Addressing newspersons here on Friday, he said FELDA is currently evaluating business opportunities with Nandan Bio and see how medicinal plants could be brought into mainstream cultivation in Malaysia and to explore how value addition and wealth creation could be made in this industry for Malaysia.

"Hence, FELDA is eager to understand how Nandan has achieved successful business model in implementing public private partnership in natural products sector. We are exploring options to float a joint venture with Nandan Bio," he said.

According to Nandan Bio Managing Director, Mr V. Bhaskar Rao, "Nandan has already established a subsidiary in Malaysia in anticipation of a possible joint venture with FELDA in bringing local herbs on to the global platform. While our expertise is in R&D and medicinal product extraction, FELDA would offer its expertise in medicinal plant cultivation and marketing the extracted products."

The FELDA Chairman said the global nutraceuticals industry is currently estimated at around $300 billion, while that of Malaysian industry stands at around $3 billion.
