Indian, Jet hike fuel surcharge

New Delhi , Sept. 2

The fuel surcharge on domestic flights is set to go up by Rs 100 to Rs 750 from this month. On Saturday, Indian and Jet Airways announced that the increased fuel surcharge would be effective from September 5.

The low-cost airline Air Deccan, however, has decided to increase the fuel surcharge on all flights operated by it from September 22. In a statement, Jet Airways has said that the revised fuel surcharge would be applicable on all types of fares and for travel in both economy and business class.

"The fuel increased surcharge will be applicable on all tickets purchased within the country and abroad. For tickets issued abroad, a surcharge of $16 per sector will be applicable on domestic travel," the statement of Jet Airways adds. The other airlines were yet to decide on increasing the fuel surcharge. In the past, most airlines have followed one another in increasing the fuel surcharge.

This is the third increase in fuel surcharge in as many months that has been announced by the domestic airlines. In July the airlines increased the fuel surcharge to Rs 500 from Rs 300.

The following month it was again increased to Rs 650. The airlines point to the rising prices of aviation turbine fuel as the main reason for hiking the fuel surcharge.
