Telecommunications FLAG's Falcon undersea cable project launch today Our Bureau
Kolkata , Sept 4 The 2.56 terabit Falcon undersea cable project of FLAG Telecom, a Reliance Communications subsidiary, is all set to be launched on Tuesday. Once operational, it would connect 10 countries in Asia with the rest of the world through the FLAG Global Network, which, in turn, would connect 35 countries across four continents, according to a Reliance Communications release. It added that to begin with, the $400-million project would link India to Egypt via Oman, the UAE, Qatar, Yemen, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Sudan. The 11,863-km Falcon cable system would provide connectivity to the fast-growing trading and tourism hubs in the Gulf to global business hubs such as New York, Paris, London, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc. The launch would also reduce the dependence of these countries on satellite bandwidth and would result in a more robust and cost-effective international bandwidth availability in the region. According to the release, the launch of Falcon is likely to result in 20 per cent drop in the prices of international connectivity. This would facilitate increased broadband penetration in India, including rural India. Lower prices of international connectivity would also increase the competitiveness of Indian IT and ITES companies.
