Supply Chain Management Concor to open 56th terminal in Ludhiana soon Our Bureau
Kolkata , Sept. 5 Container Corporation of India's (Concor) 56th terminal (inland container depot) will be commissioned shortly at Dhappar near Ludhiana in Punjab. Spread over an area of about 20 acres, the Dhappar ICD, when commissioned, is expected to ease the pressure on Concor's Ludhiana ICD. The Ludhiana ICD's throughput is estimated at 1.2 lakh TEUs or so annually. It could achieve a much higher level of throughput but for the capacity constraint. The present capacity can handle an additional 25,000 to 30,000 TEUs annually, it is learnt.
Transportation only
The problem of capacity constraint is so serious that a large number of importers and exporters in the Ludhiana region today route their imports and exports through Tughlakabad (TKD) ICD near Delhi. That is to say, the containers are stuffed/destuffed in TKD and the consignments to and from TKD are transported by road at a cost. It is, however, learnt that Concor will not undertake stuffing/destuffing operation at the Dhappar ICD, which will be used mainly for transporting loaded boxes and the empties to and from several west coast ports. This is because the stuffing/destuffing will be undertaken at the container freight station (CFS) located close-by and run by the Punjab State Warehousing Corporation. This is presumably because Concor would not like to duplicate the job already being undertaken by a State-level agency. The road trailers will be used to move loaded boxes and the empties between the Concor's ICD and PSWC's CFS. The Dhappar ICD, it is learnt, is to cater to a large number of traders located in and around Ludhiana known for exports of light engineering goods, bicycle parts, rice and other items, Govindgarh, which is the home of a number of foundry units using scraps imported through west coast ports and Himachal Pradesh exporting perishables such as fruits and vegetables.
