Fiat shifting production to Ranjangaon

Our Bureau

Mumbai , Sept. 5

Fiat has started shifting operations from Kurla in Mumbai to Ranjangaon in Pune district. The new plant is located in an industrial development zone. The shift is part of the strategy that Fiat has adopted to achieve cost efficiencies to the business by offsetting the location disadvantages at Kurla, said Mr Giovanni De Filippis, Managing Director, Fiat India.

The company had recently initiated its second round of voluntary resignation programme for its existing 900-odd employees. According to a statement from the company, the `golden handshake' offered to the workmen at its Kurla plant met with "resounding success". This was the second initiative taken by the company, earlier it had reduced its employee force from 1,650 to 900.
