`Source of sustainable business is energy of its people'

Our Bureau

Kolkata , Sept. 5

To run a successful business in a sustainable manner a company should have clarity in strategy, operational efficiency, attachment to the society and should be sensitive to the changes in its surroundings.

This appeared to be the overwhelming view among the panellists at the Calcutta Management Association Golden Jubilee CEOs' Conclave. The topic of discussion was `Sustainable business performance is a futile quest.'

According to Mr Harish Manwani, President, Unilever, Asia and Africa, the source of a sustainable business is the energy and the motivation of its people, which he called the software.

He was of the view that growth rates of businesses can be sustained because of the enormous potential that is available in our country.

Mr Ranjit Pandit, Country Head, McKinsey & Co, identified the ability of corporations in shifting from one geographical area to another and in acquiring new businesses as the main criteria for sustenance.

In this context he mentioned that Nokia, a global leader in the cell-phone sector, actually started its business as producer of paper items.

According to Mr R. Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director of Tata Sons, every business organisation should have a singular identity and it should be sensitive to environmental changes.

Mr S.M. Dutta, Chairman of Castrol India, urged individuals to carry on with their duties and stop blaming others. An interactive session followed the discussion.
