Amul to be sole GCMMF milk brand in Gujarat

Other district-level brands to be phased out

Till now, the district units were selling their own brands in their territories, besides providing milk to GCMMF.

Ahmedabad , Sept. 6

The looming threat of a possible split in the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) petered out on Tuesday, at least for the time being, after the district milk cooperative unit heads decided to sell all milk collected by their cooperative bodies under a single brand - Amul, from October 1, and phase out other milk brands.

Till now, the district units were selling their own brands in their respective territories, besides providing milk to GCMMF, which marketed the product nationally under the Amul brand. Now, Amul will be the only brand to be sold within Gujarat as well as nationally.

Mr Vipul Choudhary, Chairman of the Rs 1,100-crore Mehsana District Dairy, had earlier threatened to pull out of the Rs 3,700-crore GCMMF on grounds that his unit - producing almost a third of the milk cooperative's turnover - was not getting its "due" and that it would start its own brand.

Mr Choudhary, said to be close to the former NDDB Chairman, Dr Varghese Kurien, was also reported to have corresponded with the current NDDB Chairperson, Dr Amrita Patel, in this regard.

According to the GCMMF sources, the Federation at its meeting held here on Tuesday decided to stick to only brand - Amul, and phase out all other district-level brands from the next month. The decision was taken by the Federation meeting in which chiefs of 11, out of 13 district milk cooperative committees, were present, Mr Choudhary said in Anand.

He added that the decision was taken in the best interests of both the milk producers and the consumers. The crucial meeting was presided over by the Federation President, Mr Parthibhai Bhatol.
