Volume continues to be low at Coonoor tea auctions

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , Sept. 6

The volume offered for sale at the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) continues to be low with the catalogue showing 8.73 lakh kgs for the Sale No: 36 to be held on Thursday and Friday.

This is 19-week low volume except for the marginal increase seen last week when the offer totalled 8.61 lakh kgs.

Of the 8.73 lakh kgs, as much as 6.17 lakh kgs belong to the leaf grades and the remaining 2.56 lakh kgs, dust grades. Again, as much as 7.98 lakh kgs belong to the CTC variety and only 0.75 lakh kgs, orthodox variety.

The orthodox share is low in respect of both the leaf and dust grades. In the leaf category, only 0.32 lakh kgs belong to the orthodox variety, while 5.85 lakh kgs, CTC variety. In the dust category, only 0.43 lakh kgs belong to the orthodox variety, while 2.13 lakh kgs, CTC variety.

Price rise

In effect, the volume offered now is only half the volume offered for the corresponding sale last year. That time, the leaf grade alone totalled 12.31 lakh kgs — more than the combined volume of the leaf and dust offered now.
