BSNL offers pre-paid scheme on fixed line

Thomas K. Thomas

Aim to make fixed line more attractive than mobile phones

New advantages
No need to dial the account number or PIN for authentication when making a call.
No hassle of paying monthly rental as the amount is adjusted in the recharge coupon.
The scheme is available for WLL phone users and PCO booth owners also.

New Delhi , Sept. 6

No more exaggerated telephone bills and no more shocks at the end of the month as a result of your teenaged son or daughter spending hours on the telephone.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has introduced a scheme where subscribers can take a fixed line telephone connection on a pre-paid model just like in cellular phones.

FLPP services

Called fixed line pre-paid (FLPP) services, it allows a subscriber to make calls from a prepaid account linked to his telephone number for a predetermined amount that user decides to spend on telephone calls.

The service is unlike the calling card service where the authentication is done every time through a 16-digit PIN. The authentication of FLPP is linked to the telephone line and the user is not required to dial the account number or PIN for authentication every time he makes a call.

Senior BSNL officials said that the company's objective was to add features to the fixed line phone to make it more attractive as compared to a cellular phone.

A large number of BSNL's fixed line telephone users have surrendered their phones to take mobile phone subscription.

More facilities

"We are adding functions such as SMS and ring back tones to our fixed line telephone. Pre-paid billing is yet another step in this direction," said a BSNL official.

The advantage of a pre-paid fixed line telephone is that consumers do not get a bill and they can use the telephone according to their budget.

It is for this reason that in the mobile phone segment more than 70 per cent of the subscribers prefer to take pre-paid card than going for post paid billing connection.

BSNL is also offering on-line balance enquiry, which helps users to keep a tab on the telephone usage on a daily basis reducing chances of illegal exchange operators tapping into your line for making ISD calls.

In a pre-paid scheme, there is also no hassle of paying a monthly rental as the amount is adjusted when you buy a recharge coupon.

The scheme is available for wireless local loop (WLL) phone users and PCO booth owners also. Calling charges are the same as that of a post paid fixed line connection.
