Shipping SCI loses ground to K Line in Tetley Tea shipments Santanu Sanyal
Handling equation Up to 11 rakes (the 11th rake left the ICD on September 5), the total throughput on Tetley Tea account was 114 TEUs, of which the share of SCI at 20 TEUs was around 17.5 per cent. K Line handled 94 TEUs (out of 114 TEUs) on Tetley Tea account or a share of 82.5 per cent.
Kolkata , Sept. 7 Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) has lost ground to K Line in regard to tea shipments via the Amingaon (Guwahati) inland container depot (ICD) for Tetley Tea UK. A fiercely competitive situation marked by a virtual freight war is believed to be responsible for it. In 2005-06, SCI, with a throughput of 209 TEUs, accounted for 44 per cent of the total throughput of 469 TEUs on Tetley Tea account. If the trend so far in the current year is any indication, the share of SCI this year might be around 20 per cent. Up to 11 rakes (the 11th rake left the ICD on September 5), the total throughput on Tetley Tea account was 114 TEUs, of which the share of SCI at 20 TEUs was around 17.5 per cent. In 2005-06 also, K Line accounted for the bulk of shipments. This year its gap with SCI is widening. With the throughput of 236 TEUs, the Japanese line's share was slightly more than 50 per cent last year. This year, it has stepped up its share significantly. Up to 11 rakes, the shipping line handled 94 TEUs on Tetley Tea account or a share of 82.5 per cent. In 2005-06, APL was the other line that participated in shipments for Tetley Tea via Amingaon ICD, though its share at 24 TEUs was around six per cent. This year it has not participated so far. Last year, Tetley sourced tea from Tata Tea (366 TEUs), Assam Company (55 TEUs) and Warren Tea (48 TEUs). Tata Tea has been the sole supplier so far this year. It might be interesting to note that tea shipments from India to the UK/Continent are showing a declining trend while those to other destinations are picking up. The shipments to the UK/Continent in the first half of this year as compared to the same period last year showed a drop of 14 per cent. During the same period, the shipments to Russia and other CIS countries jumped by 30 per cent. SCI, which offers sailings to only the UK/Continent destinations, therefore feels worried.
