Supply Chain Management States - Tamil Nadu Coimbatore-Chennai daily cargo service Our Bureau
Coimbatore , Sept. 7 The Department of Post has extended its `logistics post' service to western Tamil Nadu by launching its daily cargo service between Coimbatore and Chennai here on Thursday. Four services (two up and two down) will be operated daily in this sector using container cargo vehicles by India Post which has started its cargo booking facility at its newly inaugurated Logistic Post Centre at Redfields Post office premises in the city. The Salem-based transport company, Sri Lakshmi Saraswathi Trans, will be the nominated transport operator for the Coimbatore-Chennai sector. India Post already runs cargo services in Tamil Nadu between Chennai-Bangalore, Chennai-Pondicherry, Chennai-Madurai and Chennai-Tiruchi. The Coimbatore-Chennai service will run through Tirupur, Erode, Salem, Villupuram, Tindivanam and Chengalpattu. But to start with, the service link from and to Coimbatore will be made available to Tirupur and Erode only. The Salem link will be started later, as the department is yet to firm up cargo booking space at Salem.
Minimum weight
The minimum chargeable weight of the cargo booked under the service would be 50 kg with no upper weight limit prescribed and the minimum charge for a consignment is Rs 50 and a docket charge of Rs 100. Cargo insurance will be optional, to be provided by Oriental Insurance Company. The tariff fixed for the cargo from Coimbatore to Chennai works out to Rs 2 per kg. The other features of the service include credit facility (up to one month) under `book-now-pay-later' mode, track and trace over phone, `cash-on' delivery or `to-pay' facility besides the free local pick-up of cargo (at booking point) and free delivery, free loading and unloading, etc. Mr K.V. Sundar Rajan, Postmaster General, (western region), after launching the service, said his department has planned to run exclusive container cargo service between Tirupur and Tuticorin port to meet the demand from garment exporters in about a month for which the department had floated tenders.
The department is also contemplating running full truck service (10-tonne capacity). Unlike the total costing tariff being offered by most other players in the market, India Post's cargo tariff is based on marginal costing system due to its network and staff strength; hence it should prove attractive to the customers, he added.
