Our Bureau

New Delhi, Sept. 8

Greenpeace-India, along with some consumer bodies, on Friday demanded an immediate halt of field trials of genetically engineered (GE) brinjal in India till scientific data is made available for analysis by an independent panel of toxicologists and physicians. They also stressed on the need for Genetic Engineering Approval Committee to have consultation with a representative from Ministry of Consumer Affairs and labelling norms to be firmly in place. This follows reports of illegal genetically modified rice from field trials in China contaminating food products in France, Germany and the UK.
