Telecommunications Record 4.2-m GSM subscribers added in Aug Our Bureau
New Delhi , Sept. 8 Despite the strict norms introduced for subscriber verification, the GSM industry has witnessed the highest-ever subscriber additions in August. It set a new record by adding 4.2 million subscribers during the month beating the previous best of 4 million in March 2006. The huge surge in numbers sets aside fears expressed by the industry that the Government directive to make subscriber verification procedures stricter before giving a connection for security reasons may affect the growth. With this, the GSM subscriber base has touched 86.6 million compared to 82.4 million in July. Mr T.V. Ramachandran, Director General, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), said, "the GSM industry and COAI are delighted at the record subscriber additions achieved during the month of August. This is a strong evidence of the fact that GSM continues to be the predominant technology choice of the masses."
