Freak accidents at Kolkata port

Last week, there were two accidents in areas under the jurisdiction of the Kolkata port — one at Haldia and the other in the Hooghly river close to the Kolkata Dock System — and, interestingly, both had something to do with iron ore. In the first case, several workers were playing cards by the side of a huge dump of iron ore meant for exports via Haldia. Suddenly, the dump caved in and eight workers were injured.

Fortunately, there was no death or any fatal injury.

The other accident occurred when an abandoned Greek-owned iron ore vessel dashed against the passenger jetty and the passenger launch in the Hooghly river, causing extensive damage to the jetty and the launch, but there were no casualties.

The vessel, under arrest following a court order for non-payment of dues, was being brought to Kolkata from Haldia. At Haldia, it was supposed to load iron ore but could not because of the court order.
