MR K.C. CHAKRAVARTY

Bhubaneswar, Sept. 10

Indian Bank plans to increase the number of its branches under core banking solutions from the present 585 to 1,000 by the end of March 2007, its CMD, Dr K.C. Chakrabarty, said.

Since only 18 of the total 585 branches brought under CBS were rural branches, a majority of the branches to be covered under the initiative would be rural branches, Dr Chakrabarty said at a press conference here.

Stating that the bank was taking various measures to become `a common man's bank', he said it was giving priority to increase lending to agriculture, small-scale industries, self-help groups and education loans.

Giving details of the implementation of the bank's financial inclusion project in the Union Territory of Pondicherry and other States, Dr Chakrabarty said the bank aimed to cover entire Pondicherry by the end of December this year. The project will be replicated in other areas and districts in due course, he added.
