Concern over Mullaperiyar

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, Sept. 10

The Chief Engineer dealing with inter-State river water issues has described as unfortunate the reported statement by his Tamil Nadu counterpart that steps have been taken to raise the disputed Mullaperiyar reservoir level to 142 ft. The health of the century-old dam is uncertain.

A related finding by the Central Water Commission (CWC) had prompted the controlled reduction of the level to 136 ft in 1979. Orders were also issued for the reinforcement of the structure.

High-level meetings convened by the Chairman of CWC at Thiruvananthapuram and New Delhi in the same year had concluded that the only way to deal with the situation was building of a new dam.
