Industry & Economy - Economic Offences
`Magnitude of corruption worrying'

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Sept. 10

Corruption, which has become all-pervasive and is eating into the vitals of Indian society, has posed the biggest threat to " full human development and "human rights for all".

Moreover, this menace undermines the rule of law and distorts the development process and also poses a grave threat to human security, according to Mr Justice A. S. Anand, Chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

Mr Anand said that corruption was not a new phenomenon. What was new and worrying was the magnitude and size of corruption. It enriched the rich and disproportionately affected the poor, unprotected and underprivileged and deepened their deprivation.

He was of the view that unless it was checked, the government and the people would have to pay a heavy price in that it would result in lower incomes, lower investments and lower development resulting in volatile economic swings.
