Mangalore to get 2 more SEZs

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Sept. 10

The Development Commissioner of Cochin special economic zone (SEZ), Mr C.J. Mathew, has said that three SEZs have been granted approval in Mangalore region. Participating in a panel discussion at a symposium organised by the OMEGA Forum and the Centre for Small Business Management of the Manipal-based T.A. Pai Management Institute in Mangalore on Saturday, he said two more SEZs have been given in-principle approval.

He explained about the procedures involved in the setting up of SEZ and urged the small and medium entrepreneurs to make use of the benefits of Mangalore SEZ.

`Mega' investments

The President of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr A. Srinivasa Rao, said that Karnataka's new industrial policy has equated Mangalore with Bangalore. This decision could have been taken keeping the proposed mega investments in the region. He felt that such a move would not help the region much at this stage.

Mr A.G. Pai, COO of Mangalore SEZ, said that the proposed investments in the SEZ would open a wide horizon for downstream industries in the region. Mr Prasanna Srinivasan, Secretary (Economics and International Trade), Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and Dr D. Nagabrahmam, Director of TAPMI, spoke on the occasion.
