Strategy Transitions Optical to step up Indian presence Sangeetha Kandavel
Mumbai , Sept. 11 Transitions Optical of the US plans to enhance its presence in India. With a sales office in Bangalore, the company has 7,000 retail outlets in the country and plans to open a few more in the future. "I think it is the right time for Transitions to be in the Indian market. Even though India is primarily a glass lens market it is rapidly shifting to plastic, so we want to be here and be a part of the change. And when consumers move from glass to plastic we want to make sure that they move into Transitions," said Mr Richard C. Elias, President, Transitions. Transitions lenses block harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Made of plastic they contain a photo chromic dye that activates the lens when exposed to UV rays, to cut the sun's glare, he pointed out. Priced upward of Rs 1,800, Transitions lenses are light and unbreakable and are available in a wide range of lens designs including single-vision, bifocals, trifocals and progressives. The total market for lenses in India is 75 million pieces. The company's sales have increased by 80 per cent from last year. Headquartered in Pinellas Park, Florida, Transitions Optical Inc is a joint venture formed by PPG Industries (Pittsburgh, PA) and Essilor International (Paris, France) with six manufacturing units across the globe. The company has also entered into partnership with Oakley sunglasses in March this year.
