Mangalore , Sept. 11

The Mangalore Agriculturists' Sahakari Sangha (MASS) Ltd, which is marketing arecanut and pepper in the domestic market, is all set to market honey, especially in north India.

Mr Sridhar G. Bhide, MASS President, told Business Line here on Monday that MASS Ltd has entered into an agreement with the Puttur-based South Kanara District Bee-keepers' Cooperative Society, for marketing honey produced by the latter in the domestic market.

"To begin with, we are planning to market honey for some of the pharmaceutical companies and confectionary units in north India. Some of the companies have already shown interest in this regard. The retail boom will also encourage us to push honey in the retail market," he said.

The aim of this initiative is to provide a wide market for honey - one of the agriculture-based produces of farmers in the region. The South Kanara District Bee-keepers' Cooperative Society processes honey procured from farmers in the region.

The governing board of MASS wants to market other agriculture-based and forest produces in the domestic market, he added.

The President of the Karnataka Apex Co-operative Bank Ltd, Mr M.N. Rajendra Kumar, will launch honey in Mangalore on September 16.
