Agri-Biz & Commodities - Tea
Row over production

K.K. Mustafah

PROJECTION OR PLOY?: An estate worker plucking tea leaves at a plantation near Munnar in Kerala's Idukki district. According to the Indian Tea Association (ITA), production this year could be lower by 26 million kg against last year's output of 927.28 million kg due to unfavourable weather conditions. According to the Tea Board, production during January-July increased by 16.3 million kg to 337.1 million kg. But the tea industry feels the board should review its production figures. On the other hand, buyers see the ITA's projection as a ploy to raise prices.
