May generate additional exports

Mangalore , Sept. 12

The Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPCI) is expecting to generate additional exports of about $100 million at the first-ever global buyer-seller meet - which is scheduled be held in Thiruvananthapuram from September 15-17, as part of the golden jubilee celebrations.

Addressing presspersons, Mr Walter D'Souza, CEPCI Chairman, said the council expected about 120 Indian and 30 overseas participants.

"The number of registered delegates has crossed 200 and is expected to be in the region of about 250. As of now, 42 foreign delegates from 17 countries representing over 80 per cent of the global cashew trade have already registered and another six buyers from four countries are expected to confirm their participation in a day or two," he said. Cashew importers from different parts of the world will deliberate on promotional and marketing strategies for cashews to give the system a paradigm shift.

There is active and overwhelming interest among the Indian exporters, overseas buyers, international brokers, and service providers about the event.

"The buyer-seller meet is expected to generate additional exports of about $100 million (Rs 460 crore)," he said.

Mr D'Souza said the celebrations would be held at Hotel Leela Kovalam Beach, Thiruvananthapuram.

Mr Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, will inaugurate the meet in the presence of Mr P.K. Gurudasan, Kerala Minister for Labour, Excise and Cashew, and Mr P. Rajendran, MP from Kollam, at 6 p.m. on September 15. He said the industry in India — spread over Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Orissa and West Bengal — provides employment to more than 5.5 lakh workers, 95 per cent of whom are women from weaker sections of society.

The Indian cashews were exported to over 65 countries, he said.

VISION 2020

CEPCI will set before itself an export target of Rs 5,000 crore coupled with employment generation of 10 lakh to be achieved before it celebrates the diamond jubilee in 2015.

This can be made possible by increasing the domestic crop size to about 12.50 lakh tonnes in a phased manner.

"In response to our proposal, the Directorate of Cashewnut and Cocoa Development has chalked out definite plans in achieving this crop size," he said. The deliberations at the meet will come out with the vision document for 2020.

Cashew bhawan

To commemorate the golden jubilee celebrations, CEPCI has begun work on the construction of `Cashew Bhawan' — a new R&D centre at a cost of Rs 6.25 crore at Kollam. The building will be ready by June , he added.
