With the southwest monsoon in withdrawal phase, 303 mandals are under agricultural stress.
Hyderabad , Sep. 12. Despite bouts of floods and heavy rains in Andhra Pradesh, the overall agriculture situation is causing worry. More than 590 mandals have received deficient rainfall, while 90 others got only scanty rains. With the southwest monsoon in withdrawal phase, 303 mandals are under agricultural stress as on date. The State has about 1,104 mandals. The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who got a first-hand account of the prevailing situation from officials, announced a State-level employment guarantee programme. Called the Chief Minister's Employment Guarantee Programme (CMEGP), it will be implemented in 65 mandals of Prakasam, Kurnool and Guntur districts. About Rs 2.06 crore would be granted for fodder seed supply at 75 per cent subsidy. He asked concerned departments to take up fodder growing and seed supply.
Rural employment scheme
At a review meeting on the drought situation officials also told the CM that over one lakh people were working under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) daily now. This could go up to around 5 lakhs with the emerging drought situation, according to a press release from the CMO. Dr Reddy stressed the need for social audit on the works taken up and the wages paid under the NREGS. The Union Minister for Rural Development, Dr Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, had recently visited Anantapur district, where a social audit was conducted in 600 villages under the Scheme. The Chief Minister would hold a videoconference tomorrow with the district Collectors on the latest drought situation, the release said.
