Coimbatore , Sept 12

Sun Microsystems has partnered with Bannari Amman Institute of Technology (BIT) to set up an academic centre of competency at the BIT campus at Sathyamangalam near Erode in Tamil Nadu.

According to BIT sources, this would be the first centre of competency to be set up in zone 7 of Anna University, comprising 32 engineering colleges in the districts of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode and Dindigul. The centre would focus on enabling Solaris and Java competencies.

The partnership is expected to expose the students and faculty of BIT to industry-leading technologies in Solaris and Java, be further strengthened by providing access to industry-certification courseware such as Sun Academic Initiative (SAI) and Sun IP Software (EduSoft Program) and training by Sun's India Engineering Centre to students for skills development in these areas.

Sun has also hinted that the company's India Engineering Centre would look at projects and internship for students at BIT. The skill enhancement training is expected to benefit over 60 students, initially.

Dr K.S. Sundararaman, Director of BIT, said that the institute would, through this alliance, leverage Sun's educational expertise to train and equip the next generation of professionals.

Mr Bhaskar Gandhavadi, Chief Learning Officer of Sun Microsystems, said that it was committed to helping the student community by lowering the cost of the latest equipment from the company's stable to instructors, researchers and students.
