`Heart of management education is questioning the orthodox.'

MR SARAT CHANDRAN, Director, Indo-Australian Chamber of Commerce, Chennai, addressing students and faculty of Guru Nanak Institute of Management.

Chennai , Sept. 12

Three Indian names — Mr Narayana Murthy, Mr Laxmi Mittal and Ms Indra Nooyi — are making Indian's presence and power felt in the international market. They may be from different industries, but they make a difference.

What is common to them? What bonds them? It is commitment, said Mr C. Sarat Chandran, Director, Indo Australian Chamber of Commerce, Chennai, to the students of Guru Nanak Institute of Management, Velachery, in his lecture organised under the auspices of the Business Line Club.

Making a difference

Elaborating on the topic, `Management Graduates and 21st century values', Mr Chandran said, "The heart of management education is questioning the orthodox, making a difference to human life and thinking out of the box."

The 20th century is a `techno-century' during which almost all technologies evolved, Mr Chandran said. These new technologies did people a world of good than the 19 centuries gone by.

New technologies

The Internet and mobile technology have revolutionised life. There were only 50 Web sites in 1992 but now there are more than 4.5 million Web sites. "How one combines management education and technology is what will decide success in the corporate world," he added.

Management education should focus on values. It should look beyond the corporate dictum of increasing profit. Every corporate should have its own corporate social responsibility, he said, citing the cases of billionaires Mr Bill Gates and Mr Warren Buffet bequeathing a major part of their assets to charity.

Besides the MBA students, those present on the occasion were Dr John Morais, Principal, Guru Nanak College, Prof P. Appala Raju, Head, MBA department, Mr Vijai A. Sai, the department's Dean, and Mr S. Sridhar, Assistant Regional General Manager (Circulation), The Hindu, Chennai.
