Letters Farm credit
This is with reference to "For farmers, the real issue is access to credit" (Business Line, September 12): The Government is following a policy of adding more loans and pushing the farmer into distress. If lack of access to bank credit is the cause, why should farmers who have taken loans commit suicide? A new approach and a dynamic agriculture policy to solve the crisis is called for. The import of wheat, and the Planning Commission's admission that even four per cent growth in agriculture is difficult in the Eleventh Plan period are indications of a failed policy. Input subsidies should be given to farmers. Massive investment involving the private sector for building agricultural infrastructure is necessary. New methods of cultivation need to be introduced. The problem of small land holdings needs to be addressed. Steps for solving the problem of unemployment and under-employment are necessary. Education and skill development are the key to making the best use of the youth. A. Jacob Sahayam, Thiruvananthapuram
