Hyderabad , Sept. 13

The Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd has called for setting up an institute of handicrafts technology on the lines of the National Institute of Fashion Technology to sustain and promote handicrafts.

Citing the success of similar institutes in Karnataka and Rajasthan, Mr Bandaru Anjan Raju, Chairman of the corporation, said he had urged the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to look into the issue and sanction 10 acres for the institute.

The institute would open up huge employment opportunities, besides expanding the scope for the handicrafts sector.

He also wanted the State to provide red sanders with a subsidy of 75 per cent. "There is a huge demand for handicraft articles made of red sanders in the Eastern and Far-Eastern countries," he said.

Expansion

Lepakshi, the flagship brand of the corporation, plans to have presence in all the district headquarters and important tourism destinations.

"To begin with, we are going to add seven more outlets in various parts of the State in the next few months. This will take the total number of outlets to 21," he said.

Mr B Jayaraj, Managing Director, said the corporation had registered a turnover of Rs 43 crore and a net profit of Rs 1.50 crore.

The corporation had handed over a dividend of Rs 18.79 lakh to the State. The Union Ministry of Textiles would get Rs 6 lakh, he added.
