New Delhi , Sept. 13
"Indian software companies must move up the value chain with stronger Intellectual Property Rights," said Mr Craig Mundie, Chief Research and Strategy Officer, Microsoft Corporation, at a seminar on `The role of IPR in the knowledge economy' at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). Explaining the role of ICT (Information Communication and Technology), Mr Mundie said that scientific and engineering endeavour could progress due to the advancement of IT where software was the centrepiece. He added that in the US, gains in productivity were the result of innovations. He saw ICT as a driving force for productivity increase in labour and capital, lowering of transaction cost as well for innovation. Further, he believed that IP violation affected 5-7 per cent of the world trade and had significant impact on the Government revenues.

Countries, which had opened their economies to technology and had stronger IPR were the ones that experienced phenomenal growth. Dr R. A. Mashelkar, Director-General, CSIR, said that while some of the advanced countries had benefited from strong IP laws, for a country like India the IPR must reconcile the interests of both the top-end and the bottom-end of the population.
