Rains to continue in peninsula

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram , Sept 13

Rains in the southern peninsula are set to continue for another 4-5 days as the zone of east-west wind shear is holding strong.

An upper air cyclonic circulation is expected to descend as the next `low' over northwest Bay of Bengal.

MAY STAGNATE

Dr Akhilesh Gupta of the Department of Science and Technology said the `low' looked set to cross the land only around September 18 (Monday) and to dissipate the next day.

It will lead to rainfall all the way across the peninsula and also over some parts of Central India. The system is likely to intensify further, says the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF).

According to Mr Jim Andrews of AccuWeather.com, the trough located over the Arabian Sea will have to be watched for delivering heavy to excessive west-side rains from Karnataka to Sri Lanka, even the islands of Lakshadweep.

BUZZ TO THE EAST

Meanwhile, Mr Andrews says there is already a `low' to the south-southeast of Hong Kong, which has potential to gain `named storm' status.

According to Dr Gupta, there are early indications that `some moisture feed' from this system will get transmitted west into the Bay. This would go only to further ramp up monsoon activity in the southern peninsula and the northeast of the country.

FAIR WEATHER

In the northwest of the country, conditions have already set in for the southwest monsoon to withdraw. "Things have the look of mid summer, but with much weaker surface winds, resulting from higher pressures and lower pressure gradients," says Mr Andrews.

HEAVY FALLS

According to the NCMRWF, fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls occurred over Assam, Meghalaya and Kerala during the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Isolated heavy to very heavy falls are likely over the north eastern States, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
