Bangalore , Sept. 14 The Karnataka Government on Thursday said it has banned an injection formulation made by a Himachal Pradesh-based contract manufacturer for Elder Pharma. In an apparent case of mislabelling, the injection used against infections had the label of Mumbai-based Elder Pharma's Zoftariz (Ceftriaxone sodium). However, it did not contain that drug but had diclofenac sodium, an analgesic, the Health Minister, Mr R. Ashok, told a news conference. Elder Pharma's brand of cephalosporin is used to treat meningitis and STDs. Health Biotech Ltd of Baddi in Himachal manufactured the drug for it. The drugs controller, Mr M.N. Ramamurthy, said his counterparts in other States had been alerted and Himachal and Maharashtra requested to take action against the two companies. The batches had been traced, potential user agencies alerted and the department was taking action to seize it. Further investigation was on, he said. The Government analyst's verdict on the "spurious" drug was that the seized sample was not of standard quality "with respect to description, presence of diclofenac sodium and absence of Ceftriaxone."
