Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, plans to operate passenger flights to South India by 2007, according to Mr Mohamed Sherief, Manager, Capacity Management Cargo, Etihad Crystal Cargo.

The airline currently operates weekly seven passenger flights to Mumbai and four to New Delhi, as well as three cargo freighters to Chennai, four to New Delhi and one to Mumbai.

Last month, Etihad started two weekly freighter operations to Bangalore.

Mr Sherief said that the airline has had "100 per cent" load factors out of Chennai.

The airline trucks bonded cargo from other centres such as Coimbatore, Tirupur, Bangalore and Hyderabad to Chennai. The airline also trucks from Ahmedabad to Mumbai.

About 75 per cent of the airline's cargo is transhipped at its hub at Abu Dhabi to Europe, US and other parts of the Gulf. The exports are mainly garments, leather products and pharmaceuticals.

The import cargo consists of spares, electronic devices and mobile phones.
