Govt to expand activities under `Edusat'

The State has already started using the space technology in education and telemedicine areas and these initiatives will be carried forward.

Thiruvananthapuram , Sept. 15

The Kerala Government will further strengthen its association with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to utilise the latter's various applications of space technology for the State's development, the Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, said.

Inaugurating a workshop on `Space technology utilisation for development of Kerala' here on Friday, the Chief Minister said that the State had already started using the space technology in education and telemedicine areas and these initiatives would be carried forward.

He noted that 15 Satellite Interactive Terminals (SITs) had been installed between Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod districts as part of the `Edusat' programme. The Government had now decided to expand the activities under `Edusat', he added.

As part of this, 20 more SITs at district centres and 21 SITs at engineering colleges in the State will be established soon. Also, work has already started on installing `Receive Only Terminals' in 400 schools in Kasaragod district and 800 centres in other districts.

Health Sector

Besides, a comprehensive project to utilise the advantages of space technology in the health sector has been conceptualised jointly by the Health Department and the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC). Already, thousands of cancer patients in the State had been extended treatment through tele-consultation, the Chief Minister said.

He disclosed that the Government had decided to work in association with ISRO for the industrial development of the State. As of now, more than 25 industrial units, including the Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation (Keltron) and the Kerala Hitech Industries Ltd (Keltec), had been supplying high-quality components to VSSC, he said.

MoU

A memorandum of understanding has been signed for establishing a titanium sponge plant at the Kerala Minerals and Metals Ltd jointly by ISRO/VSSC and the Industries Department. There was scope for setting up of new industrial units and generation of more employment opportunities in tandem with the development of the aerospace sector, the Chief Minister pointed out.
