Pune , Sept. 14

The domestic market for small cargo movement vehicles is all set to witness hectic action with Mahindra & Mahindra launching the Maxx Maxi truck, to fill the niche between the large three-wheeler and the big pick-up vehicles.

The company also simultaneously launched the Bolero Pik Up FB, a vehicle targeted at the higher end of the small cargo moving market. The two new launches effectively completes the company's product portfolio in every segment of the small cargo vehicle category where it already has the Mahindra Champ three-wheeler, the Mahindra pick-ups and the Bolero Camper.

The Maxx Maxi, with a payload of 900 kg can carry load of 1.5 tonnes and has been designed to deliver better speed and fuel efficiency along with manoeuverability on any terrain than any other vehicle in the market in this category, Mr Vivek Nayer, Vice-President, M&M Auto Sector, told the newspersons.

The vehicle will take on Tata Motor's Ace model, which has had an unchallenged run in the market for over an year.

M&M is betting big on the Maxx Maxi, which it will roll out nationally this month, according to Mr Nayer who said it will create a new segment in the market.

"With better power, speed (up to 100 km against the 60 km that existing vehicles in the category deliver) and fuel efficiency of 16 km/litre, the vehicle will mean larger number of trips for the buyer whose business typically depends on the number of trips he can make everyday," he pointed out.

"The small cargo moving vehicles will drive the market in the future with the hub and spoke model of cargo movement now becoming a reality," Mr Mahesh Kulkarni, DGM, Marketing, Automotive sector, said.

The small cargo moving segment of the industry comprises the large three-wheeler, mini trucks and pick-up vehicles which currently has a market size of 1,50,000 vehicles and expected to touch 2,50,000 in the next two years.

M&M currently has 60 per cent market share in the large pick-up segment and 49 per cent of the large three-wheeler market.

The Maxx Maxi truck has been priced Rs 3,41,900, ex showroom Pune while the Bolero will cost Rs 4,29,900.
