Logistics - Air Cargo
Indian, AI get the goods

Our Bureau

By the reckoning of the Civil Aviation Ministry brass, the issue of cargo transportation by air by the state-owned carriers has started receiving a good deal of attention. Thus, three old passenger planes are being modified and transformed into freighters by Indian while Air India is acquiring on lease aircraft to augment its cargo-carrying capacity. Also, negotiations are on with foreign airlines for probable tie-ups for transportation of cargo.

The cargo complexes at all major airports are being upgraded, with a new one commissioned in Kolkata recently and special handling facilities being created at several airports particularly to handle perishables. The growth of domestic air cargo traffic has been 8-9 per cent and international 5-6 per cent but the prospects are bright for achieving a much higher growth. Interestingly, India follows an open sky policy in the matter of air cargo transportation, there being no restrictions on foreign carriers in carrying goods to and from the country.
