CITU flayed for staging protest
Our Bureau
Coimbatore, Sept. 17
The Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) has criticised the CITU-affiliated Banian and General Workers Union for staging protest demonstration in front of TEA headquarters in Tirupur on September 13.
When the talks on the knitwear workers wage revision were being held by the joint committee of knitwear industry bodies and a joint representative forum of various textile workers trade unions, it was `wrong' on the part of the CITU to have broken rank and separately held such a protest demonstration. This action on the part of the union smacked of its `big brother' attitude, the TEA said and wondered whether other trade union affiliates figuring in the joint forum engaged in the wage talks approved this `one-upmanship' from CITU. The derogatory slogans raised against the TEA office-bearers during the demonstration were in bad taste and highly despicable, TEA said.
The TEA in a statement, maintained that holding out the threat of demonstration or token strike even as the conciliatory talks were in progress would amount to an arm-twisting tactic, which would do no good to the workers.
