Power States - Kerala `Energy clinics' to cut power consumption Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , Sept 17 With power consumption in Kerala steadily on the rise, Energy Management Centre (EMC), the nodal agency for implementation of the Energy Conservation Act, has stepped in with a programme to reduce consumption. Through `energy clinics', the programme aims at bringing down consumption through awareness campaigns being conducted by trained female volunteers in the household sector. According to EMC officials, the total electricity consumption in the State has touched 42 million units from 35 million units till recently. If the trend continues, there could be severe power shortage during April-June, they said.
HOUSEHOLDS TARGETED
The immediate short-term solution to the problem is efficient utilisation of energy in all sectors of the economy. The household sector has been targeted as it accounts for 45 per cent of the total energy consumption in the State. Apart from high consumption, the household sector is also seen as responsible for high energy wastage. With proper awareness, the sector can save energy by at least 30 per cent, the officials said. Being the energy managers in each household, housewives can make a major difference in the scenario if they get proper training and techniques in energy conservation. Besides reducing energy demand, the households could also save on energy bills. The programme will be implemented in all panchayat, municipal and corporation areas in the State. As of now, there are `energy clinic' volunteers in 300 panchayats and the programme will be taken to other areas through conduct of workshops in the coming days.
