Hopes to widen portfolio from cotton knitted garments for men, women and children to include wovens and accesories

Coimbatore , Sept. 18

PGC Industries, the vertically integrated knitwear manufacturing/exporting company from Tirupur, is getting into domestic apparel retailing with the launch of `T-Mart' stores.

Locally known as Prem Group Company, PGC Industries has opened its first `T-Mart' boutique at the posh Race Course Road in the city which, according to the company, will also serve as the launching pad for marketing its garment retailing solution.

Expansion plan

PGC has targeted to spread 2010 `T-Mart' points of sale across the country by the year 2010 with a mix of flagship stores (50 company owned outlets), 300 franchisee-stores and 1,660 `shop-in-shops', according to Mr Duraisamy, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of PGC Industries.

`T-Mart to start with will offer cotton knitted garments of men's, women's and children's collections which would be later widened to include the entire textile/clothing range including wovens and accessories, said Mr Duraisamy. PGC Industries being a 50:50 partner with the Swiss apparel brand `Switcher' is already exposed to garment retailing in India and `Switcher' is targeted largely at the trendy up-end urban clientele. The T-Mart boutique has been conceived to attract the price sensitive but quality conscious mid-segment (`B' and `C' category) customers.

Another key element behind T-Mart launch is, according to Mr Duraisamy, to eliminate the costs trapped by the middlemen in retailing so as to pass the price benefit to the consumers coming to its retail outlets. The Coimbatore boutique will have sub-brands, `pink amonade', (women), `Pitstop' (kids collection), `Born' and `innocence' (infants), besides the designer brand `Heizzuer'.

With hyper-markets and big organised retail stores poised to enter the Indian commercial landscape, the concept retailing solution from T-Mart can hand-hold the small and mid-enterprises likely to take hit by the big ticket entry in apparel retail, said Mr Vikram, Director of PGC Industry.

T-Mart will give logistic, branding solutions to them as well as identifying suitable retail platform for the unorganised retailers. With his company providing the `apparel design outsourcing' facility, the retailing company will be in a position to meet the needs of domestic corporate buying of garments/uniforms.

The company has proposed to have 80 points of sales by March next year and it has already signed up with 60 shop-n-shops for retailing apparels and accessories.
