Moderate fall in 2005 tea prices

Rates down 11.1% in North

Kochi, Sept. 19

With Indian tea production continuing its growth story in 2005, tea prices recorded moderate fall in North and South Indian markets.

Addressing the annual general meeting, Mr P.T. Thomas Chairman of the Tea Trade Association of Cochin, said the average price realised for South Indian tea fell by 9.3 per cent last year to Rs 42.67 per kg (Rs 47.03 per kg), while average North Indian tea prices fell by 11.1 per cent to Rs 63.63 per kg (Rs 71.57 per kg).

Kochi way ahead

Among the tea auction centres in South India, Kochi was way ahead realising an average price of Rs 49.90 per kg, followed by Rs 40.91 for Coimbatore and Rs 36.03 for Coonoor. Kochi also topped among the South Indian auction centres in volumes, recording 49.54 per cent of the total sales volume, followed by 34.18 per cent by Coonoor and 16.28 per cent from Coimbatore.

Tea production in the country increased by 13.14 per cent to 927.98 million kg (820.20 mkg ), during 2005. South Indian tea production increased by 35.7 per cent to 227 mkg (167.20 mkg), while North Indian production increased by 10.47 per cent to 700.97 mkg (634.50 mkg).

Among the tea producing States of South India, Tamil Nadu recorded a growth of 40.6 per cent to 154.60 mkg (114 mkg), Kerala registered a growth of 19.23 per cent to 67.03 mkg (47.80 mkg), while production from Karanataka dipped by 0.03 mkg to 5.37 mkg (5.40 mkg).

Despite the moderate price reverses during 2005, Mr Thomas said tea industry was beginning to look up after a bad patch spanning almost five successive years.
