Airlines Marketing - Market Shares

New Delhi , Sept. 19 Jet Airways, which carried 7.91 lakh passengers during August this year, continued its domination of the domestic market with a market share of more than 31 per cent. The airline had transported 7.83 lakh passengers during the previous month. The latest data collated by the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) shows that the private sector airlines had a market share of 77.7 per cent while Indian had a market share of 22.3 per cent. The state-owned airline was at the number two spot with a market share of more than 22 per cent having carried 5.74 lakh passengers. The low-cost airline, Air Deccan was at third position with a market share of 18.3 per cent. There was, however, a decline in the number of passengers carried by the airline at 4.64 lakh during August, down from 4.99 lakh passengers during July this year. During August, SpiceJet also saw a decline in passengers carried at 1.61 lakh down from 1.86 lakh passengers carried in the previous month. Both Air Sahara that carried 2.25 lakh passengers and Kingfisher that carried 2.22 lakh passengers performed better than in the previous month. Interestingly, the two airlines were almost neck-and-neck having a market share of 8.8 per cent and 8.7 per cent respectively during August. The two low-cost airlines, Go and IndiGo, carried 81,000 passengers during August. The data shows that 25.38 lakh passengers travelled with the scheduled domestic airlines during August up from 24.73 lakh passengers carried in the previous month.
