Board of approvals on SEZs to meet

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Sept 20

The Board of Approvals (BOA) on Special Economic Zones (SEZs) will meet on Thursday to finalise guidelines on the social infrastructure that need to be created in such zones, a top Commerce And Industry Ministry official said.

Speaking at the India SEZ Summit 2006, organised by the CII today, Mr Gopal K. Pillai, Special Secretary, also said that State Governments would be advised at the BOA meeting on issues relating to "means of acquisition" of land for setting up of such zones. Concern has been expressed in certain quarters over the manner in which various States are dealing with the land acquisition process.

On social infrastructure, Mr Pillai made it clear that people from outside the SEZs would be entitled to use the social infrastructure facilities like hospitals and schools set up within the zones. The BOA meeting may also look at giving formal approval for cases in which it had earlier given in-principle approvals.
