Education States - Tamil Nadu `College is a place to learn to unlearn' Our Bureau
Mr N.N. Subramanian, Co-founder and Director, Maveric Systems, and Mr K.V.D. Kishore Kumar, Director, Vel Rangarajan Dr Sagunthala Group of Institutions, during a BL Club meeting at Vel Sri Ranga Sangu College of Arts and Science.
Chennai , Sept. 21 One is supposed to learn and unlearn in the college. But how many are bothered about this? They are not focused on what they are supposed to be doing and land themselves in trouble at the time of placement and performance at the job, said Mr N. N. Subramanian, (Subbu) Co-founder and Director, Maveric Systems, to the students of MBA at Vel Sri Ranga Sangu College of Arts & Science, after inaugurating the Business Line Club as well as `B-Magnets' 06, an association of management students.
Mind that matters
"Yes, colleges expose and introduce you to areas of academic interest. But, what is important and what industry looks for is something over and above what you read in the class," he explained to the students. Industry looks for what kind of attitudes/ perspectives/world view/personality that one brings to the job. "What you bring to your career is your mind," added Mr Subbu. Mr Subbu said that reskilling is not only important but essential as after few years one becomes rusty. Reskilling has become a norm and more so in this highly dynamic ITES industry. "As a management graduate, do I accept de facto what others tell me or am I investigating and finding out the fact?" asked Mr Subbu. In the manufacturing industry, one can become a vice president only after one turns 50, whereas in IT and service industry the trend has been reversed. If companies do not promote employees every year, then employees say that the company does not appreciate them. The key leadership qualities, according to Mr Subbu, are generosity of mind, fearlessness and high degree of self-belief. A leader should have a heart to love every employee of the organisation, he added.
