RISING INPUT COSTS: A trader exhibiting arecanuts that have been processed and coloured at a market in Mangalore. Though areca growers are getting better prices, increasing input costs are cutting into their margins. Raw arecanut is currently ruling at Rs 78-80 a kg up from around Rs 60 at the beginning of the year. On the other hand, input prices such as copper sulphate have doubled to Rs 150 a kg as copper prices in the global market have galloped on shortage.
