Hyderabad , Sept. 22

Matrix Laboratories Ltd has announced that it has signed a licensing agreement with Gilead on Friday for the manufacture and sale of a generic version of Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate using Gilead's proprietary technology.

Tenofovir is a well-established therapy for second-line treatment of HIV/AIDS and has recently been endorsed by the World Health Organisation for first-line treatment as well. It is characterised by low incidence of resistance as compared to other first-line therapies, the company said in a communiqué to stock exchanges.

Under the arrangement, Matrix would have access to the US-based Gilead's technology for manufacture and sale of Tenofovir in 95 countries including India. In addition, Matrix said it would be able to make cost-saving modifications to the technology to enable improved access to the developing world.

Further, Matrix said it would also have the right to develop combination therapies using Tenofovir to enhance the effectiveness of existing therapies. According to the company, this licence further boosts its significant portfolio of anti-retroviral active pharmaceutical ingredients developed for combating HIV/AIDS.
