WORLD BANK'S OFFICE: The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr M, Karunanidhi, with the World Bank Group Chief Financial Officer, Mr Vincenzo La Via, at the inauguration of the new building of the bank in Chennai on Friday.

According to an official press release, the Bank has made significant contribution to the State in urban development, water supply, infrastructure and irrigation.

Our Chennai Bureau reports: Currently, five World Bank-funded projects are being implemented. Their total value is Rs 7,211 crore covering highways, health, urban development, rural poverty and tsunami relief. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Karunanidhi said that the Government had promised full support to the offshoring initiative, which has been a "grand success". Many high-value added activities are now based at Chennai instead of in Washington, he said.
