Sept. 22
The National Institute of Oceanography, Kochi, jointly with the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, will organise a two-day workshop on Biogeographic Information System for Indian Ocean here on September 25 and 26.
Ocean Biogeographic Information system is a mechanism to assess and explain the diversity distribution and abundance of life in the ocean and also the changes taking places to them.
India being the largest country bordering the Indian Ocean is primarily concerned about the Indian Ocean and region and its biodiversity. Around 8 million tonnes of fisheries are captured annually from the Indian Ocean.
Biodiversity elements of the Indian Ocean are relatively less known as compared with other world oceans and whatever is known is scattered and mostly inaccessible. It is noticed that tremendous changes are being take place in the biodiversity of the Indian Ocean. This makes the workshop more relevant.
PARTNERSHIP SOUGHT
The workshop also aims to identify potential partners and evolve strategies to formulate viable projects on Indian Ocean biodiversity.
Prof Dr S. Kannaiyan, Chairman, National Biodiversity Authority, will preside over the function. Prof Dr P.K.Abdul Aziz, Vice Chancellor, Cochin University of Science and Technology will inaugurate the workshop. Around 30 participants from various research organisations will attend.
