Cola issue: `Kerala HC ruling unfortunate'

The Kerala High Court's verdict on Friday morning that gave a clean chit to the two cola majors, and asked them to resume sales and manufacture of their products in the State, is extremely unfortunate, the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has said.
"Nothing has changed on the ground that makes the drinks safe. The Government has still not notified the safety norms to the companies and without these, the drinks remain as unsafe as before," said Ms Sunita Narain, Director, CSE, whose organisation's report triggered the pesticide controversy.
She added that it was fine for the Court to say that the CSE report was not to be taken as a standard to decide the adulteration in the drinks, but at the same time, the Government also had not released data of the two samples of carbonated drinks that had been tested, based on which the Health Ministry had given the two companies a clean chit.
Meanwhile, both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo welcomed the Kerala High Court's verdict. Both the companies reiterated that they complied with all the necessary standards prescribed.
