Mr Giovanni Bisignani

According to IATA Director-General and CEO Giovanni Bisignani, the failure to liberalise the air transport sector is delaying the recovery of a sick industry — airlines are estimated to have lost more than $40 billion in past five years.

In his address to a global symposium in Dubai recently on Air Transport Liberalisation, Mr Bisignani, said that at the core of liberalisation debate lay the fundamental question of the role of the governments.

While the case for change and greater commercial freedom was urgent and immediate, the response of the governments was disappointingly slow, he said, hoping that this important business agreement would not be hijacked once again by domestic policies. He rejected the arguments of safety and security as excuses for not to liberalise.
